Critical Care Billing Services
We ensure 100% billing compliance through our Critical Care Billing Services that suits your revenue goals.

Understanding the Complexity of Critical Care Billing
Critical Care Billing is notably more complex than many other medical billing specialties. It involves precise documentation of the time and intensity of care, especially in urgent scenarios like septic shock. Surgical Critical Care procedures add further challenges, as accurate billing depends on both duration and the critical nature of services provided. This makes it difficult for healthcare providers to ensure timely and efficient billing without compromising patient care.
What does Critical Care Really Mean?
Critical Care is the process of providing medical attention to patients who have life-threatening illnesses or injuries. Although it is identical to the ICU, it primarily provides care for those who have cardiac disorders or other diseases that are quickly deteriorating.

Efficient Coding for Critical Care Billing Services
Critical Care Billing requires strict adherence to coding guidelines due to its high reimbursement potential and time-based billing requirements. Understanding when and how to use specific CPT codes like 99291 and 99292 is essential to avoid claim denials and ensure accurate compensation for services rendered. Proper documentation of time and care level is key to effective billing practices.

01
Initial Critical Care Time: CPT Code 99291
Use CPT code 99291 to report the first 30 to 74 minutes of Critical Care provided on a single calendar date. This code can only be used once per date per patient, even if multiple physicians from the same specialty are involved.

02
Additional Critical Care Time: CPT Code 99292
For each additional 30-minute increment of Critical Care provided beyond the initial 74 minutes, CPT code 99292 should be used. This code supports accurate documentation of extended services.

03
Critical Care Less Than 30 Minutes
If Critical Care services provided are less than 30 minutes in total on a given day, you should not report them using Critical Care codes. Instead, use the appropriate Evaluation and Management (E/M) code, such as for subsequent hospital care, to ensure proper billing.
Total Duration of Critical Care | Appropriate CPT Codes |
---|---|
Less than 30 minutes | 99232 or 99233 or other appropriate E/M code |
30–74 minutes | 99291 × 1 |
75–104 minutes | 99291 × 1 and 99292 × 1 |
105–134 minutes | 99291 × 1 and 99292 × 2 |
135–164 minutes | 99291 × 1 and 99292 × 3 |
165–194 minutes | 99291 × 1 and 99292 × 4 |
195 minutes or longer | 99291 and 99292 as appropriate (per the above illustrations) |
